Dehongli'r Dyffryn: Llwybrau'r Merched: Interpreting the Valley: Women's Pathways

Taith efo Elin Tomos

Mae dylanwad y diwydiant llechi yn drwm ar ddyffryn Peris ond wrth bori trwy lyfrau hanes a lluniau o’r cyfnod buan iawn y gwelwch mai nodi cyfraniad y dynion i’r diwydiant a wneir gan amlaf.

Rwy’n grediniol mai dim ond trwy chwilio a gwrando ar leisiau gwragedd, gweddwon, merched a chwiorydd y chwarelwyr y mae modd gwneud cyfiawnder â hanes y bröydd llechi.

Mi fydd ‘Dehongli’r Dyffryn: Llwybrau’r Merched’ yn daith gerdded ryngweithiol fydd yn edrych ar y profiad benywaidd o fyw yn Nyffryn Peris yn ystod oes aur y diwydiant llechi. Y bwriad ydy canolbwyntio ar hanes pum person, a hynny mewn pum lleoliad a fu’n arwyddocaol yn ystod eu bywydau. Unigolion digon cyffredin oedden nhw i gyd yn y bôn - ond mae cofnod hanesyddol ohonynt wedi goroesi am eu bod wedi ymddwyn yn ‘anghyffredin’ neu’n groes i ddisgwyliadau eu hoes ar ryw bwynt yn eu bywydau. Dw i eisiau annog y rheiny sy’n ymuno â’r daith i roi eu hunain yn esgidiau’r rhai sy’n cael eu trafod- ac i ddilyn yn ôl eu traed yn llythrennol.

Interpreting the Valley: Women's Pathways

This interactive walk will look at the female experience of living in Dyffryn Peris during the golden age of the slate industry. The intention is to focus on the history of five people in five significant locations in their lives. They were basically quite ordinary individuals but a record of them has survived because they behaved 'unusual' or contrary to the expectations of their age. I am keen to interweave the present with the past and consider how the residents of Llanberis responded to their actions at that time as well as questioning how our society treats them today. PLEASE NOTE THIS EVENT IS IN WELSH ONLY. https://www.tickettailor.com/events/elintomos/1380685

Mae Merched Chwarel a’r Rhwydwaith Cyfuno yn eich gwahodd i weithdai creadigol i ferched haf yma, yn Storiel, Bangor. Fel helaeth o waith Merched Chwarel, byddwn yn dathlu hanes merched a gofyn y cwestiwn “Pwy yw merched chwarel y gorffennol, presennol a’r dyfodol?” Fydd y gweithdai yn gweld merched yn drilio ac yn gwnïo ar lechen, i greu dyluniadau unigryw. Bydd y darnau o lechi yn dod ynghyd i greu un cerflun cyfan.

Oes gennych chi grŵp o ferched fuasai a diddordeb archebu sesiwn?

Merched Chwarel and the Fusion Network invite you to creative workshops for women at Storiel, Bangor this summer. As with other Merched Chwarel work, we will be celebrating women’s stories and asking the question “Who are the quarry women of the past, present and future?” The workshops will see women drilling into and sewing patterns onto the slate, creating their own individual designs. These pieces of slate will come together to create one whole sculpture.

Are you part of, or do you know of a group of women who might be interested?

Gweithdy Dresel Griddfan Merched Chwarel Groaning Dresser Workshop, Storiel

The Dresel Griddfan/Groaning Dresser is Merched Chwarel’s centerpiece installation at Storiel, involving all four artists and curator.  Having created a form for the dresser, we invite you to help make the Dresser increasingly groan with an accumulation of stuff, playfully challenging the historical representation of the quarryman’s wives.

We are looking for:

-       objects (found, treasured, trinkets, souvenirs, gifts wanted/unwanted)

-       works (pictures, samplers, 3-D pieces)

-       cards, sayings, photographs, dresser pictures

-       stories (personal associations with the dresser – positive and negative)

If you would like to be part of the project, please come to Storiel between 12 - 4pm on
Friday 14th June or 26th July.

There will be an opportunity to experiment with indexing, mapping, collaborative curation, as well as tea, cake and a chat.

Croeso cynnes at bawb! Warm welcome to all!

Objects can be collected at the end of the exhibition in early September.
As the objects will be on open display, you will be leaving them at your own risk!

Underground Maenofferen

This is an event being organised by Llechwedd Slate caverns, not a Merched Chwarel event, but maybe of interest! There’s going to be limited tours into the MASSIVE chambers at Maenofferen - the first time the chambers have been open to members of the public since the last of them closed in the late 90's.The chambers are as they were left by the miners - see the machinery, buildings and much more on your journey around Maenofferen. No lights (except head torches), no music, just pure mine exploration... Tours will take place on 20, 21, 27 and 28 April

Byddwn yn defnyddio’r llais llafar yn ogystal â’r gân yn y gweithdy hwn. Fel rhan o’r profiad, bydd y rhai sy’n cymryd rhan yn creu offeryn llechen bach i gyfeilio i’r llais; rhywbeth y gallwch ei gymryd adref efo chi.

_____________

Come to this fun, bilingual, voice workshop at Amgueddfa Llechi Cymru Slate Museum in Llanberis, with the inspirational Sam Frankie Fox. The workshop is designed to help develop your own - and our collective Merched Chwarel voice. It will be very informal - no previous experience necessary!

She will guide us through a series of vocal games, vocal characters and archetypes, call and response sequences and some unison and simple harmony songs. We will use both the sung and the spoken voice for this workshop. As part of the experience, participants will make a mini slate instrument to accompany the voice; something that you can take home with you.

We will start off indoors in the Caban in the museum, and weather permitting, we may go to Chwarel Vivian Quarry to try out - and develop - our quarry sounds.

This bilingual workshop is for over 18s.

The indoor and outdoor workshop will be fully accessible.

Canu Chwarel - Singing Slate Workshop series

Y mae côr dynion yn adnabyddus yng Ngogledd Cymru, ond er mwyn darganfod llais Merched Chwarel, rydym yn trefnu nifer o weithdai hwylus canu / sain ddwyieithog i ferched ym mis Ionawr a Chwefror 2019 ym Mro Ffestiniog, Dyffryn Peris, Dyffryn Ogwen a Dyffryn Nantlle gyda chymorth Llechi Cymru Cais Safle Treftadaeth y Byd.

Bydd pob gweithdy ychydig yn wahanol i'w gilydd, oll yn cael eu rhedeg gan arweinydd profiadol: Jamie Dawes (19 Ionawr); Sam Frankie Fox (26 Ionawr) a Siân Miriam (23 Chwefror). Bydd pob gweithdy mewn lleoliad newydd ac yn cynnig arbrofion gwahanol o lais, gan roi cyfle datblygu llais eich hunain, yn ogystal â llais cyfunol Merched Chwarel. Mae'r gweithdai i gyd yn £ 5 (ond mae lleoedd am ddim hefyd ar gael, os yw'n rhwystr). Y byddant yn anffurfiol iawn - nid oes angen profiad blaenorol (na hyder) canu!

Gallwch ddewis dod i un neu fwy o'r gweithdai (gwiriwch ar gyfer addasrwydd oedran / hygyrchedd.)

Byddwn yn cofnodi'r sesiynau ac yn defnyddio'r synau yn ein harddangosfeydd drwy gydol 2019. Rydym hefyd yn gobeithio trefnu rhyw fath o berfformiad Canu Chwarel yn ystod Gwanwyn / Haf 2019: Buasai'n wych os hoffech gymryd rhan yn hynny hefyd (ond nid oes angen gwybod eto).

Mae gweithdai yn £5 y sesiwn. Oherwydd nifer gyfyngedig, mae archebu'n hanfodol. Cliciwch fan hyn.

Gweler y digwyddiadau unigol isod am ragor o wybodaeth.

The male voice choir is well known in North Wales. But in order to find the voice of Merched Chwarel, we are arranging a number of fun, bilingual, women/girls’ singing/sound workshops in January and February 2019 in Bro Ffestiniog, Dyffryn Peris, Dyffryn Ogwen and Dyffryn Nantlle with support from Llechi Cymru Wales Slate World Heritage Site bid.

Each workshop will be slightly different, and run by an experienced, workshop leader: Jamie Dawes (19th January); Sam Frankie Fox (26th January) and Siân Miriam (23 February). Each workshop will offer a different type of voice work, and will take place in a different location, giving you an opportunity to come along and develop your own - and our collective - Merched Chwarel voice. The workshops are all £5 (but free places also available, if it is a barrier to your attendance), and will be very informal - no previous experience (or confidence) of singing necessary!

You may choose to come to one - or more - of the workshops. Note: please check each workshop for age/accessibility suitability.

We will record the sessions, and will use the sounds in our exhibitions throughout 2019. We also hope to arrange some kind of Canu Chwarel/Singing Slate performance in the Spring/Summer 2019: it’d be great if you would like to be part of that too (but no need to commit to this just yet).

Workshop spaces are just £5 but numbers are limited so booking is essential. Book here!
